Cologne is the classic Father's Day gift and the classic Father's Day mistake. It gets given, it gets thanked for, and it sits at the back of a cabinet behind the one he already likes.
The problem isn't the idea. It's that most people buy a bottle instead of solving a problem.
Work out what he already has
Go and look. There's one bottle he's been refilling for years, and the front of it tells you almost everything.
Dark bottle, name with "noir" or "intense" in it? He likes warm and heavy. Clear bottle, blue or green, "sport" or "aqua" anywhere on it? He likes fresh.
Then don't buy that one again. Buy the thing it doesn't cover.
The gap most fathers have
Nearly every man over forty wears one fresh scent, every day, for every occasion. It's fine at the office and fine at the garden centre, and it's slightly underdressed at a nice dinner.
So the gift that gets used is the evening bottle he'd never buy for himself. Something warmer and darker, for the four or five nights a year he puts a jacket on. He'll be surprised by it, and he'll use it, because it fills a hole he'd stopped noticing.
Five that work
Thedore — lavender, cocoa, amber and leather. Refined, quiet, and it smells like someone who dressed on purpose. The best "evening bottle" on our shelf.
Thedore Intense — the same idea deeper: iris, vanilla, amber, cedarwood, vetiver. For colder months.
Seraphic — coffee, tonka bean and vanilla. Warm and generous, and the one people comment on.
Masterpiece — bergamot and pink pepper over patchouli and vetiver. If he's a fresh-scent man and you don't want to push him too far, this is the safe upgrade.
Invite — clean, classic, almost old-school. For a father who thinks perfume is for other people.
Two rules
50 ml, not 100 ml. If he doesn't take to it, nobody has wasted much. If he loves it, he'll tell you, and then you know what next year is.
Skip the gift set. He'll use the bottle and the shower gel will outlive all of us.
Why this is easier than it used to be
Ours are around $30 rather than $130, so the evening bottle stops being a risk and becomes an obvious idea. You can even give two — the warm one and the fresh one — for less than a single department store box.
We've picked twenty scents for Father's Day, chosen for how they actually wear rather than by what's on the end cap.
We're D&P Perfumum — our own fragrances, our own New Jersey stores, and a bottle that gets finished instead of stored.
