Chanel's women's fragrances are the ones people come back to after ten years of trying other things. They're rarely anyone's most exciting bottle and they're very often the one that's still there when the exciting ones have been given away.
Here's what the famous ones smell like, and the D&P bottle built the same way.
If you love No 5 — try Fifth Daniele
The most famous perfume ever made, and genuinely strange the first time you smell it. Aldehydes give it a soapy, sparkling, almost metallic opening, and underneath there's ylang-ylang, iris and jasmine doing something rich and powdery.
It smells like a perfume rather than like a flower, and that was the point in 1921.
Fifth Daniele opens on lemon and bergamot, moves into ylang-ylang, iris, jasmine and lily of the valley, and keeps that composed, polished character all the way down.
If you love Coco Mademoiselle — try Miss Carna
The modern classic. Orange and bergamot at the top, jasmine in the middle, patchouli underneath — bright, clean and slightly sharp, with a warmth that arrives later.
It's probably the most-worn fine fragrance in America, and it deserves it.
Miss Carna brings orange, mandarin and orange blossom into mimosa and jasmine, over a patchouli base. Fresh and grown-up at the same time.
If you love Chance — try Fortune
Younger, brighter and spicier: pineapple and pink pepper into iris and hyacinth, with patchouli holding the bottom.
Fortune is pineapple, iris, patchouli, pink pepper, hyacinth and jasmine. Sparkling on top, soft in the middle, and it lasts far longer than something this bright has any right to.
If you love Allure — try Enticing Away
The underrated one. Peach and rose over a soft vanilla and woody base — warmer and rounder than the rest of the house, and quietly the easiest Chanel to wear.
Enticing Away opens with lemon, bergamot and mandarin, into peach, rose, jasmine and water lily. Clean, polished, and it works everywhere.
And one that's pure fun
Barby — apple, apricot, burnt sugar and vanilla. Sweet, playful, and completely unserious in the best way. $29.99
Why they cost what they cost
Chanel runs $140 to $200 for 100 ml and almost never discounts — the price is part of how the brand holds its place, not a reflection of what's in the bottle.
Ours are around $30, at eau de parfum concentration, blended with quality oils sourced in Europe, vegan and cruelty-free.
