If you've ever smelled a men's fragrance and thought "that smells expensive and I have no idea why", there's a good chance you were smelling vetiver.
It's the most useful note in perfumery and almost nobody outside the industry can name it.
What it is
Vetiver is a grass. Specifically the roots of a tall grass grown in Haiti, Java and Réunion — the part underground, dug up, washed, dried and distilled.
That origin explains the smell. It isn't woody in the way a tree is woody. It's rooty: dry, earthy, a little smoky, with something green and bitter running through it.
What it smells like, properly
Imagine damp soil after rain, but clean rather than muddy. Add dry grass, a wisp of smoke, and a faint bitterness like grapefruit peel.
It's not a warm note and it's not a sweet one. Vetiver is cool and dry, and that's exactly why it's so valuable — most base notes add warmth and weight, and vetiver adds structure without either.
Why it's in everything
Three reasons, and every perfumer will give you the same three.
It cuts sweetness. Drop vetiver under a sweet scent and it stops being sugary and starts being sophisticated. This single trick is behind half the men's fragrances you like.
It makes fresh scents last. Citrus dies in an hour. Citrus over vetiver still reads as fresh at four in the afternoon.
It smells clean without smelling of soap. A rare and difficult thing to achieve.
Who it's for
Vetiver is the classic answer for anyone who wants to smell good at work without smelling like they're wearing perfume. It's understated, it's grown-up, and it never reads as trying.
It has a masculine reputation in the West that it doesn't really deserve — a vetiver in a floral is stunning, and some of the best women's fragrances ever made are built on it. But if you're a man who finds sweet scents too much and fresh scents too thin, this is the note you've been looking for.
Where to start with ours
Masterpiece puts vetiver under bergamot and pink pepper — fresh on top, dry and adult underneath. The most wearable introduction.
Thedore Intense is vetiver with iris, vanilla and amber, which softens it into something almost powdery.
Hymn is the cleanest, most office-friendly version we make.
For women, Enticing Away and Glamorous show what vetiver does inside a floral: it keeps it from turning sweet and makes it last twice as long.
