Ask someone to describe musk and they'll struggle. Ask them to pick the musky one out of five bottles and they'll get it right immediately.
It's the most worn note in perfumery and the hardest one to put into words.
What it smells like
Clean skin. That's the closest honest description.
Not soap — soap is a different, sharper thing. Musk is warmer and more human: the smell of a person you like standing close to you. Slightly powdery, slightly sweet, softly animal at the edges without ever being unpleasant.
It's also the note people mean when they say a perfume smells "expensive" or "like nothing, but good".
Where it came from and where it comes from now
Originally from deer. Genuinely — a gland from the musk deer, harvested in a way nobody would defend today. It was one of the most valuable substances in the world for centuries.
Nobody uses it now. Every musk in modern perfume is synthetic, and that's a straightforward improvement: no animal, more consistent, cleaner, and available in dozens of variations that natural musk never offered. All of ours are synthetic, which is part of why every D&P perfume is vegan.
What it does in a blend
Two jobs, and it does both quietly.
It makes things last. Musk molecules are heavy and slow to evaporate. They hold the lighter notes down and stop a scent vanishing in an hour. This is why musk sits in the base of nearly everything.
It smooths. Drop musk into a blend and the sharp edges soften, the gaps fill in, and separate notes start smelling like one perfume instead of three ingredients. It's the glue.
Of the perfumes we make, more than 140 have musk in them. That's not a coincidence — it's the note that makes the rest work.
Who it's for
Anyone who wants to smell good without smelling like they're wearing perfume.
Musk-forward scents are the classic office answer, the classic "my husband hates perfume but likes this one" answer, and the classic first fragrance for someone who finds everything else too much. They sit close to the skin and reward people who get near you.
Where to start with ours
Love Forever is soft musk with warmth behind it — the easiest one to wear.
Attic Wit puts raspberry and rose over a musk-and-amber base, brighter but still close. Redolent Magic and Carriage are the cleaner, more skin-like versions.
Royal Blue and IIGeorgios are the men's picks, where musk sits under fresh citrus and holds it together through the day.
