Winter changes what works
Cold air holds a scent close to the body and slows down how fast it evaporates. That does two things.
Warm, heavy scents — vanilla, amber, tonka bean, oud, spice — come into their own. What felt like too much in July feels exactly right in December. They sit close, they last, and they smell like being indoors when it's dark outside at four.
Light citrus scents, meanwhile, struggle. Cold flattens them. A fresh summer bottle given at Christmas is a gift that doesn't make sense until May.
So if you're buying in December, buy warm. Almost regardless of who it's for.

Smaller over bigger, when guessing. A 50 ml they love beats a 100 ml they're polite about.
Don't buy the scent you want to smell on them. It's a gift, not a preference.
