Oud, explained without the mystique

Journal Aug 27, 2026

No note in perfume gets talked about with more reverence and less clarity than oud. So: what it is, what it smells like, and whether you'll like it.

What it actually is

Oud is resin from the agarwood tree. The tree only produces it when it gets infected by a particular mould — the resin is the tree's immune response, essentially a wound healing.

That's why it's rare. You need an old tree, an infection, and years of waiting. Wild agarwood has been harvested close to extinction, which is why the best oud oil costs more per gram than gold, and why most oud in perfume today is either farmed or recreated in a lab.

The synthetic versions are not a cheat, incidentally. They're cleaner, more consistent, and they don't require cutting down a hundred-year-old tree.

What it smells like

Warm, dry wood — but sharper and stranger than sandalwood or cedar. Underneath there's something almost medicinal, a little smoky, and depending on the oud, faintly sweet or faintly animal.

The first time most people smell it, they don't think "nice". They think "what is that". It takes a couple of wearings.

Once it clicks, nothing else does the same thing. Oud gives a perfume weight and seriousness. It's the reason a scent can smell expensive without smelling loud.

Who it's for

Oud is the note that made Middle Eastern perfumery famous, and it's worn by everyone there — men, women, at work, at home, on ordinary days. The idea that it's a special-occasion scent is a Western import.

That said, it's not a beginner's note. If you like fresh, light, soapy scents, oud will feel like too much. If you already lean toward woody, spicy or leathery, it's the natural next step.

Wearing it without overwhelming a room

Fewer sprays. Two is plenty. Oud is heavy and it carries.

Skin, low. Chest, not neck. You want people to find it when they're close, not before they arrive.

Cold weather helps. Heat makes oud bloom and expand. In August, three sprays becomes six by noon.

Where to start with ours

Our oud scents run $39.99 to $59.99 — more than the rest of our shelf, because there's more in them.

Encre Magique and Apricity are the accessible ones: oud present but softened, good for a first try. Black and Burgundy are the serious end — darker, longer, unmistakably oud. Puissance sits between the two.
