Every summer the same thing happens. You buy something light and citrusy because heavy feels wrong in July, you spray it at eight in the morning, and by lunch there's nothing there.
The instinct is right. The execution is usually wrong.
What heat actually does to perfume
Heat makes a fragrance evaporate faster. That's the whole mechanism, and it cuts both ways.
The light notes — citrus, green leaves, watery accords — are volatile to begin with. In 90-degree weather they're gone in an hour rather than three.
The heavy notes do the opposite. Vanilla, amber, oud and patchouli bloom in heat. They expand, get louder, and take up more room than they would in November. This is why a scent you love in December feels suffocating in July: it isn't behaving differently, it's just being amplified.
So summer isn't about wearing less perfume. It's about wearing the kind that survives the top and doesn't overwhelm at the bottom.
What actually works
Fresh on top, warm underneath. Citrus that opens the scent, then musk, light woods or a soft vanilla to hold it down. The freshness gives you the summer feeling; the base keeps it alive past noon.
Musk is the summer note nobody credits. It's clean, it's skin-like, it doesn't shout in heat, and it lasts. A citrus scent with musk under it will outlive a pure citrus by hours.
Avoid the pure fresh ones for long days. They're wonderful for a two-hour dinner and a waste of money for a workday.
How to wear it in the heat
Fewer sprays than you think, in more places. Two on the chest beats four on the neck — the neck is hotter and burns through a scent faster.
Moisturise first. This matters twice as much in summer, because heat and air conditioning both dry skin out and dry skin holds nothing.
And re-apply at lunch rather than doubling up in the morning. A summer scent is a two-shift job.
