Some perfume houses have one famous bottle. Dior has a shelf of them, and they span seventy years — which almost nothing in this industry manages.
Miss Dior came out in 1947, the same year as the New Look. Diorissimo followed in 1956. Poison landed in 1985 and was banned from some restaurants for being too much. Fahrenheit arrived in 1988 smelling like petrol and violets, which sounds terrible and isn't. J'adore in 1999. Sauvage in 2015, which became the best-selling men's fragrance in the world almost immediately.
Different decades, different noses, different ideas of what perfume is for. All still selling.
What Dior does differently
There's a house habit, and once you notice it you can't stop noticing it: Dior scents are built around one loud idea and then made wearable.
Poison is a huge, syrupy plum. Fahrenheit is a genuinely strange leather-and-violet thing. Hypnotic Poison is almond and vanilla pushed to the edge of too much. None of these are safe ideas. But each one gets sanded just enough to work on a real person going to a real office.
That's harder than it sounds. Most houses do the safe idea. Dior does the risky idea and then makes it polite enough to sell.
The four everyone knows
J'adore — the golden one. Fruit and white flowers, bright, feminine, unmistakable at any distance.
Miss Dior — depends which era you mean, which is half its charm. The modern one is fresh and rosy with a bite of citrus.
Sauvage — bergamot and pepper over ambroxan, the note responsible for that clean, almost electric trail. Divisive among enthusiasts precisely because it's everywhere.
Hypnotic Poison — almond, vanilla, coconut. Warm to the point of being a dessert, and one of the most loved bottles ever made.
And the price
$120 to $180 for 100 ml, depending on which and where. That's the campaign, the counter, the bag and the name. The liquid is a smaller share of it than you'd guess.
Which is why most people own one Dior and ration it.
What we make instead
We build our own perfumes in the same directions — the almond-vanilla one, the plum one, the fresh rosy one, the peppery clean one — with quality oils sourced in Europe, at around $30.
Names like Jolie Love, Bitter Perla, Cinderella, Bounty, Masterpiece, Kelvin and Thedore. Every one is an eau de parfum, so it lasts. Every one is vegan and cruelty-free.
